FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE ANTIQUE CORSET MUSEUM
THE ANTIQUE CORSET MUSEUM
The collection of the Antique Corset Museum consists of over 350 original antique corsets dating from the 18th century to 1970, along with bustles and all items related to underwear. Items from the collection have been on loan to museums around the world, including the Musee les Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the USA and Canada. You can visit the museum located inside Lace Embrace boutique in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The presentation will include a variety of items from the collection including maternity & childrens corsets, sport corsets, 18th century stays, Regency stays, men's corsets/'belts', ribbon corsets, workwear corsets, and more if time permits! We will also look at an example of original bustles, Edwardian hip/bust pads, and Edwardian garter/suspender belt. Whew - where are the smelling salts?!

Whether you have a specific effect in mind or are looking to present a living history impression that reads a bit more 'lived in', this class will present some basic methods for distressing and ageing your ensemble to show dirt, wear, staining, fraying, dried blood, sweat and more.
The lecture will review some basic tools and supplies, including demos of some techniques easily attained at home, photo examples and recommended resources. Effects for camera vs in-person will be discussed, as well as discussing analysis and goals to determine your approach. A pdf handout will be provided for further research.

This class was a hit when featured in Costume On 1, we're bringing it back for another go!
An overview of 18th c. ribbon embroidery examples, including discussion of the stitches and materials used, with two sample designs you can try at home. Includes use on garments (muffs, pelerines & court suits & more) and household items (fire screens, needle cases).
Students will review ribbon selection, types of stitches & receive 2 pdf patterns to try at home. Instructor will provide information about optional ribbon kit when registering.

Have you ever wondered how silk millinery flowers are made? It’s easier than you might think! Using just a few simple materials and heated tools, you can create almost any blossom you can imagine. Fabrics can be hand-dyed to create lifelike blooms, or you can use scraps of your dress fabric for a perfect match.
Join Denise for a demonstration of how to shape and assemble a lush silk rose. The class will provide information on materials, tools (including how to improvise tools with found objects), and a template for making your very own old-fashioned rose. Optional kits are available with enough supplies to create one rose.
Please Note: This class is a demo, you will not be working alongside the teachers during class as the tools used are very hot and require your full attention. The instructor will provide a temporary link to class videos so you can re-watch the techniques for 2 weeks after this session.

APROPOS EMBELLISHMENT:
NEEDLEWORK DETAILS ON DIFFERENT SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASSES IN 16TH & 17TH CENTURY ENGLAND
RELICS IN SITU
So you’ve made a Tudor costume but what’s the best way to add needlework embellishments? Where do you add lace? Blackwork? Gems? What can your persona appropriately include in your costume to reflect your status? Historically accurate embellishments are actually both more wide-ranging and specific than is often addressed in traditional resources on 16th and 17th century costume.
The class will examine a variety of pictures and sources including details of extant objects from museum collections, visual references like paintings and drawings, as well as documentary evidence such as wills, inventories, and diaries to discuss different styles of embroidery and needle lace used by the yeoman, merchant, gentry, and nobility. We will also consider appropriate color palettes, materials, and techniques. Attendees will learn how to best apply embellishment to their costumes that are appropriate for the impression they want to make.

A BASIC INTRODUCTION TO 'THE WORKWOMAN'S GUIDE': UTILIZING A PERIOD MANUAL & 1830S CAP WORKSHOP
Written by an anonymous Englishwoman in 1838, The Workwoman’s Guide is a valuable resource for theater and film as well as living history/reenactment purposes. The book contains patterns for basic clothing items, household linens, and furniture, as well as recipes and suggestions for care of clothing and the home. Its diagrams, descriptions and line drawings of finished products are an invaluable tool to those interested in reproducing items from the early 19th century.
The workshop will familiarize attendees with using the Guide, including deciphering the measurement unit of 'nails' and a quick overview of research images of caps. Students will then practice by using a pattern diagram from the book to draft and construct a simple women’s cap.

MAKING YOUR OWN CUSTOM HAT BLOCKS: IMPROVISING WITH BUCKRAM, CARDBOARD & WIRE

Blocking hats can be so rewarding, but if you don't have the right shape to block your style, what can you do?
As a primarily theatrical milliner, Denise has developed some ways to get around the problem of blocking a hat that she hasn't the block for. She will lead a three hour session to showyou some of the ways to use materials such as buckram, chipboard, cereal boxes, construction foam,
and wire to make a block that is sturdy enough to block a few hats on.
This class will demonstrate patterning the shape, choosing the best materials, mocking up the shape in chipboard, layering the buckram, wiring the shape, and covering the block to protect it.

FROM FEATHER TO PLUME:
WORKING WITH OSTRICH FEATHERS FOR PERIOD LOOKS

Have you wondered why the millinery plumes of old look so lush and full, and the feathers available today seem so thin and unimpressive in comparison?
Milliners of the past used techniques to layer and shape the feathers, making them into those gorgeous creations. Instructor Denise Wallace-Spriggs will lead you through these methods to reproduce your own beautifully lush period looks.
The class will review the cutting, stitching and layering techniques to improve upon the natural feather, including methods of shaping and curling the plume. The instructor will also demonstrate dyeing methods and show a few beauties from her own collection to inspire you to create your own Regency plumes, and hat trims.
