The Art of Beetle Wing Embroidery

Beetle wing embroidery, made with glittering gold work embellished with the wing casings of the Jewel Beetle, was popular through most of the 19th century and into the 1920s. This online workshop with a live teacher will use couched cording techniques to make two simple motifs and learn to shape and apply the wings.
Students will receive a pdf handout and embroidery kit for class.
The embroidery kit includes:
Cotton fabric with designs pre-marked
Students are expected to provide:
Basic handsewing kit (thread snips, wax, thimble)
6-10" Embroidery hoop
Nail clippers &/or craft scissors for cutting wings
Optional: needle threader
Optional: double boiler, rice cooker or Instant Pot w/steamer insert
*Images shown are examples of beetle wing embroidery in period fashion and not necessarily what will be replicated in class*
